Description

Samson Porcelain Famille Verte Wucai-Style Pair of Baluster-form Jars and Domed Covers with pointed ovular knops, painted with Ho-Ho Birds in bright enamel hues on branches in flowering trees, between bands of geometric patterning . The undersides with underglaze blue concentric bands.

13 1/2" H.

(This pair of vases was lamped at one point in the 1940s, and unlamped in the 1970s. The knops are the original knops, reglued to the covers; the bases have professionally-done restorations to the drill holes. One vase with a light chip to the foot rim, one cover with some rough areas).

Though both vases have concentric blue bands typical of K'ang Shi-period wares, they are copies of Chinese covered jars, and European.

Property of a private New York collector, acquired in 1951 from a shop in mid-town Manhattan.
