Description

Classical Stencilled New York Marble-Top Pier Table with Mirror back, the rectangular marble top over a conforming rosewood-veneered frame with incurvate medial shelf, the front with scrolling Ionic capitals over the piers and the mirror back between pilasters to the rear. The realegs have simple bullet form feet, the front legs capped by acanthus-leaf carved volute-shaped verde antique feet.

Fine scrolling gilt stencilling to the shelf, and a band of gilt geometric diamonds and scrolls to the apron.

Unsigned, but of a style often identified with Deming and Bulkley, New York manufacturers with a strong retailing base in Charleston. Bulkley lived in Charleston, which gave the firm an enormous edge in placing the firm's own New York-made furniture in the homes of distinguished Charlestonians seeking to appear as sophisticated as the wealthy of cities such as Boston, New York, Philadlephia and London. While the actual form of this table is quite simple, the complex gilt decoration to the lower shelf makes it appear to be nearly as lavish in decor as consoles made in Paris and in London. The major difference from these is the lack of gilt-bronze details.

Unsigned.

40 1/2 x 38 x 22 3/4, rough dimensions.

Circa 1835-1840.

The marble top is a later replacement, but conforms properly to the table. Minor cracking to veneer to shelf area.
