American Gale & Willis Sterling Silver Christening Cup New York 1859-1862

Designed in four sections: the top and bottom rims; the handle, and a wide band of rolled decoration. The rims are rolled with flowerheads and acanthus leaves in a lateral band; the main section is decorated with a border of convolvulus, and an inner roundel of roses and scrolls surrounding the engraved inscription," William F. Wilcoxsen/ from/His Godfather. The hollow handle is molded with a slight upcurl to the bottom. 

Underside marked GALE & WILLIS / 925 STERLING / cypher of GALE & WILLIS/ NEW YORK. Willis was Gale's son in law, who enjoined Gale Sr. in business while Gale's own son was too young to join the firm. After Gale's son was old enough, the firm changed names again. 

The cup demonstrates typical Rococo Revival decorating motifs, and is in good order. The seam is visible along the side,
