Description

French Louis XVI Style Pair of Ormolu and Marble Lamps , the ormolu-mounted square marble bases topped by a gilt-bronze male and a female classical figure, holding aloft a basket issuing flowers, centering the now electrified lamp post and two-light bulb fitting. Sold with a pair of very fine ivory knife-pleated silk-shantung lined shades custom made in England.

This pair of lamps date to the Beaux Arts period of the late 19th century. The figures are imbued with tremendous energy, and the flowers emanating from the baskets are elegant and well-wrought.

Such lighting fixtures were considered de rigueur in the salons, libraries and entertaining spaces of fine homes of Europe and America in the late 19th Century.
