French  Hippolyte Boulanger (Choisy-le-Roi) Pair of Japonisme Faience Vases, circa 1885

Hippolyte Boulanger, working at Choisy-le-Roi in France, made some of the most wonderful Chinese- and Japanese-influenced pottery in the last quarter of the 19th Century. Not only were many of the forms legitimately copying Asian forms, the colorations and styles were very well copied, too. This pair of green Chinese-Style faience Vases, circa 1885, have been molded in the Cong shape. The Cong is a square-sided vessel of rectangular height, with a waisted neck. The Choisy vases have all-over curling decoration to the olive-green surfaces, between the geometric body lines, marked with dark brown delineation. The interior necks are enameled in bright Persian turquoise blue. Marked to underside with HB, Choisy-le-Roi and impressed shape number

10"H. x 4 1/2" W. x 4 1/2" D.
