James Wayne Extruded Funk Glass Vase Vessel
Description
James Wayne Extruded Funk Glass Vase Vessel, it’s a “schwing” of a thing. James Wayne (California, America, active 1960 -1980). Made of iridescent green grey purple glass, blown as a tapering cylindrical vase with purposeful partial collapsed elements, and with a phallic drip sticking out from the main body, complete with head. Part of the vase with a series of bubble wrap type impressions to sides, stretched label or writing to top and also to side opposite of the extrusion. This vase expresses all of Wayne’s playful strength as a glass blower. Signed to underside in incised script, “James Wayne” and dated underneath “69” for 1969. 7 1/2” H. X 7 1/4” W. (9 1/2” W. To tip of extrusion) x 6” D. Very good condition, minor surface wear and scratches, some differing densities of coloration as made, and some sagging and air bubbles, also as made.
James Wayne had a career spanning only two or so decades, in which he made ceramics and glass. His glass works express the same kind of funk, homo erotic power and humor found in contemporary ceramic works made in the Bay Area at the same time. Robert Arneson was in Wayne’s circle of associations.
